2016 has been packed with memorable and innovative smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, the iPhone SE, the LG G5 and the HTC 10 round off the main smartphone releases so far in 2016 and each of these smartphones have definitely opened eyes in their respective market. While the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are seen as the Android smartphone to beat so far, the recently released HTC 10 has definitely made an impact on the smartphone market, despite the HTC One M9 being somewhat of a disappointment.

So what exactly has changed on the new device and what can you expect from it? Read below and find out more!

What exactly does the HTC 10 offer?

Well, let’s start with the phone’s official specifications:

  • Display: 5.1in AMOLED QHD (ppi 577)
  • Storage: 32G or 64GB + microSD (up to 2TB)
  • CPU and RAM: Snapdragon 820 + 4GB of RAM
  • Front Camera: 5MP
  • Rear Camera: 12MP, 1.55um pixel size, a very wide f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilisation, and “2x wider range and ultra fast” laser autofocus.
  • Battery: 3000mAh

When looking at the phone’s specifications, it’s hard to be overly impressed, simply because this phone has already been done before. However, that is exactly where HTC is shining. HTC’s goal is not to create a very innovative and gimmicky phone, but instead create a reliable and high quality phone that does what it is supposed to do.

htc 10 body

The HTC 10 has an aluminum unibody exterior. On the back of the device, there are sleek edges that really makes the phone look much more visually attractive. Aluminum exteriors look great but are sometimes slippery in your hands. A great way to ensure that the HTC 10 remains brand new while also looking great is to pick up a personalised phone case!

Any clutter that was once caused by HTC’s infamous speakers is gone, as the speakers on the phone have been moved down to the bottom of the phone. In their place are 3 buttons, 2 of them capacitive buttons and one of them acting as a home button or fingerprint sensor.

htc 10 camera

Many companies nowadays seem to be focusing on releasing high-end cameras to the masses, seemingly as camera dependent apps such as Instagram and Snapchat are growing rapidly in popularity. While the HTC 10 does not seem to have an advanced camera with its 12 MP sensor, the device takes great pure photos. According to Gizmag, the HTC 10 ousts the iPhone 6S and even the Samsung Galaxy S7 under low lighting, with the HTC 10 taking arguably some of the most realistic and unsaturated photos. That says a lot about the effort put into the camera, especially since the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge cameras were highly praised by critics all around.

As previously mentioned, the HTC removed their distinguishable front facing speakers from the HTC 10 and moved them over to the bottom and top of the phone. While there are significantly less speaker holes, sound quality did not decrease. Sound was still rich and deep and made room for a finger print sensor on the front of the phone.

Headphone quality is reportedly great, with deep and intense bass and true sound. For a regular user, it is hard to recognize a big change in sound quality, however it is good enough to notice a difference!

What other changes were there?

The HTC 10’s 3000 mAh battery is nothing to boast about, however it is still able to get the day’s job done. It drained slightly faster than the Samsung Galaxy S7 while beating out the iPhone 6S.

Additionally, the HTC 10 supports Android’s “adoptable storage” technology, so its possible to use external storage up to 2 TB to make your smartphone the one place for all your documents.

The HTC 10 did not change the smartphone market in anyway, but it is still one of the more impressive phones to be released in 2016, simply because the company did not try to hard to impress the masses and instead focused on creating a reliable and fully functional phone. Many critics have claimed that HTC has fallen off as a company and that their phones lack the spark that once made their phones great. However, with this year's flagship release, perhaps HTC can make a comeback into the smartphone market by continuously delivering simplistic yet fully functional and respectable phone.
