Every year on March 8th, it is International Women's Day. The theme differs every year but the general idea is to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. The ultimate goal is to achieve equality for men and women all around the world. Are you curious what this year's theme is? Read on to find out more!
Every year, the first International Women's Day is commemorated which took place in New York on March 8th, 1908. The women achieved an eight-hour working day, which marked the beginning of the emancipation of women. The day is always dominated by the fighting spirit and sense of solidarity of women. The International Women's Day is linked to a theme every year.
This year, the theme #PressforProgress calls for gender equality all around the world. Theoretically in the human rights, same rights for men and women have already been established. Nowadays, it's is quite normal that men and women are perceived as equals but unfortunately in practice, it doesn't always seem sufficient.
In 2030, the situation for women should be different and they should then have the same possibilities as men. Decisions need to made in politics, the economy and in public life. To achieve this, countries need to establish specific policies and laws that give women equal rights in all areas.
In 1921, the International Women's Secretariat proposed to choose a fixed date for International Women's Day. The selected day is March 8th because on this day in 1917 thousands of women protested against the food shortage.
Joining this year's theme is of course voluntary. Use #PressforProgress on all your social media accounts and ask men for their opinions on this theme. In addition to women's organizations, museums, universities and the government also join this special day.
